This Month's e-Health Tip:

New studies show the best way to keep off the extra pounds

Holiday calories piled up as fast as the names on your gift list? Unfortunately, studies show most people gain an average of 7 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year's.

Now more research points out that the best way to maintain your weight is to exercise at a higher level than usually counseled.

Three new studies show that people who successfully lose weight and don't regain it typically burn 2,800 calories each week during physical activity. This is about 1 hour a day of walking. Activities such as running or swimming burn off the calories at a faster rate.

The current recommendation for weight maintenance is 1,000 calories per week--about a 2-mile walk. In order to burn 2,800 calories you would need to walk about 3 to 4 miles per day or about an hour.

The bottom line: Reduce your bottom and keep the weight off by doubling your usual amount of exercise.
